World Teachers’ Day
On Wednesday 25 October we had a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank all our amazing teachers for the important work they do within our classrooms and school community. The SSOs put on a lovely morning tea and together we showed our appreciation for the teachers’ dedication and the incredible work they provide to our students.

Site Improvement Plan
As part of our Pupil Free Day this Friday we will be focusing on development of our 2024 Site Improvement Plan. Our Professional Learning Communities made up of teachers across years levels have been busy reviewing and evaluating our student learning progress in 2023 to establish our next steps.
The new Site Improvement Plan forms the strategic focus of our work moving forward over the next year. We will continue to hold the line in the 2 areas of Literacy and Numeracy underpinned by learner agency with a focus on goal setting.
Our challenge of practice for Numeracy will continue to develop the proficiency of problem solving. In Literacy we will continue to use the Brightpath moderation tool as our driver for improvement in writing with a focus on Functional Grammar.
Kind regards,
Andrew Dowling

Learner Agency Workshop
On Monday 6 November, we were lucky enough to participate in the learner agency workshop, run by the Department for Education.
We discussed what it means to be a good learner and talked about how we think we could encourage learner agency at schools across the state.
It’s a great feeling to have a voice and know that people are hearing and acknowledging it. We would definitely encourage other people to be involved in this amazing experience next year! We have already put up our hands to be involved.

We were lucky to attend a workshop online about student voices and learner agency. There were two people running this online workshop. Their names were Martin Westwell the CE for the DfE and Professor Guy Claxton who is a well-known expert on student agency and engagement. We learned about all the mistakes that help learners grow and the mistakes that can be costly or unnecessary.

Remembrance Day
On Friday 10 November, we (The SRC Execs) held the 2023 Remembrance Day ceremony. In the lead-up to the ceremony, we allocated roles and jobs and did as many practices as we could before the day. There were many last second changes during the ceremony. For example, we had to go inside because of the heat. We were confident and adaptable to these changes and in the end, we were all proud of the job we did.

Green Team
This term the green team has been working hard to prepare and begin establishing an Indigenous edible garden. We have included plants such as Warrigals (native spinach), Saltbush, Karkalla and Murnong, and will continue to add to this garden over time.
A huge thanks goes to Harvey and Archie Lindner and their family, who kindly donated many of the edible plants to get this garden started. Also, to Iris Garrett and Nivyn Hunter who have managed the Green Team this year and have been committed to numerous gardening projects, garden maintenance and plenty of weeding!
Well done green thumbs.

We ask that next time you go shopping, you purchase a non-perishable item of food
and/or a toy to place under the Giving Tree in the Office.

Resource Centre News
Summer Reading
Rec-Year 5 students are able to borrow books from the Resource Centre for the summer holidays.
Why read during the summer holidays?
The research shows that children who don’t read much over the long summer holidays can lose gains they've made in their reading levels and fluency over the year. This is true for all children, but especially for children who are struggling readers. Children who keep reading over the summer holidays can avoid the 'summer slide' and may even make reading gains for the start of the next school year.
To encourage your child to read over the long summer break, take the pressure off and keep it fun. Make summer reading about reading for pleasure. Let your child choose what they read with the focus on relaxation and enjoyment. ‘Easy’ reading is OK - getting into the reading habit and enjoying what they're reading is important.
Timeline:
Week 7
- last week for normal borrowing
Week 8
- all books and readers due back by Monday 4 December
- all Rec-Year 5 students given a Summer Reading Contract (participation optional) to be signed by them & an adult at home and returned to school as soon as possible
Week 9
- Monday 11 December is the last day for returning contracts
- students borrow books for the holidays
