Term 2
Welcome back to all our wonderful students and families. We hope you all had a chance to enjoy time with your loved ones and experience the wonderful weather we were lucky enough to receive over the break. As we enter the second term, we’re looking forward to continuing the momentum from term 1. Term 2 is always a busy term full of activities and events and we’re looking forward to seeing the continued growth and development of our students.
Pupil Free Day
The staff began the term with a Professional Development session on the big ideas in number with Departmental Curriculum support officers Jo Campbell and Travis Clinton. This session focused on deepening our understanding about the importance of Place Value across primary mathematics and how to help our students with this important concept through the developmental sequencing of teaching. Research provides information about the development of children’s thinking in place value, yet place value is an ill-defined concept in terms of teaching components. Its place in mathematics is clear, but how that translates to what should be taught, and how, is not.
What is place value?
- Place Value is simply "every value in its own particular place."
- What is the place value of 1 in the hundred’s column? It's "place value" is 100.
- What about the 3 in the ten’s column? It's "place value" would then be 30.
- And what about the 4 little units in the unit’s column? That would be 4.
Place value is the gateway to understanding addition, subtraction, multiplication and even algebra.
Staff worked through a variety of valuable sessions and activities on how to developmentally support students’ understanding on the six aspects of place value:
- count
- compare/order
- make/represent
- calculate
- rename
- name/record
Staff gained new insights into the teaching of place value and are excited to implement the strategies learned into mathematics lessons moving forward.
Kind regards
Andrew Dowling
Front Garden
Our sensational Grounds person Neil has been busy redeveloping and enhancing the front garden at the entrance to the school. Neil has been moving rocks and removing old shrubs and will be populating the garden bed with new plants and mulch. Once again, a big thank you to Neil for his amazing work!
Wellbeing and Engagement Collection Survey
Our students have been invited to take part in the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection survey. The survey will be open in weeks 2 to 5 of term 2 (Monday 8 May to Friday 2 June 2023).
Purpose of the survey
Young people’s wellbeing is an important part of how they learn at school. The survey seeks students’ views about their wellbeing and their engagement with school. Students in years 4 to 12 across the state will be invited to participate and the information collected will help the education system and broader community to support young people’s health and wellbeing.

Children’s Second-hand Book Sale
The Year 6 Resource Centre team will be running a Children’s Second-hand Book Sale in Week 9 of this Term. They will use the proceeds to select new books for the Resource Centre.
They will be sending out details of the sale soon but in the meantime, we would love donations of books that your family have outgrown. Donations can be dropped at the Front Office or the Resource Centre.
Also, while you are checking the shelves, we are in need of some more books for Our Adult Little Free Library (if you have any that you can bear to part with)! Thank you.

Softball
Softball is a game a lot like baseball; just a longer bat and bigger ball. My Dad
encouraged me to try out for the SAPSASA softball team because he enjoyed playing baseball when he was young. There were trials over a few weeks in March. A lot of boys tried out, so two teams were created. I made the Southern Heights team. Our coach’s name was Jamie. He was very supportive and fair.
The softball carnival took place at West Beach over three days in week 10. There were boys and girls teams from all over South Australia. My team played three games each day, but the first two games didn’t count. Although we lost a couple of games on the first day, we came together well as a new team and won all the rest of our games. The final game was against the next best team that we had lost to in a practice game – we ended up beating them 6-2 to finish first in our division. Everyone got a gold medal! My favourite part of the carnival was batting, because I got people home, including myself. I plan on joining a baseball team next season, because it’s a really fun sport.
I’d also like to thank Shelley for all her help in making this happen! By George
Belair Family Fun Day
How wonderful it was to meet as a community in our glorious national park on a gorgeous autumn day! Thank you to everyone who supported this special Eden Hills PS tradition - the first one since 2019.
It was especially good that so many family members were able to attend as well. We saw lots of happy faces as children and adults involved themselves in a variety of happenings including walks, the adventure playground, ball games on the courts and a range of games and activities in Gold Escort Park, including Jenga, finska, bocce, frisbee, the parachute, painting and an energetic game of ‘capture the flag’.
EHPS Parents & Friends Committee Easter Picnic
Thank you to the families that joined us on Easter Monday at Belair. The children had a wonderful time exploring and the weather was perfect for a group picnic.
Save the Date
Our next event will be for the adults! It’s a chance to socialise with parents and get to know your Governing Council members.
Date: Thursday 8 June
Time: 7.00-8.30pm
Location: Belair Hotel
ANZAC Dawn Service
On Tuesday, Chelsea and I attended the Anzac Day dawn service at Blackwood. We represented the school by laying a wreath at the Memorial Soldier. We were both proud to wear the medals of our Great Grandfathers. By Pip
Casual Day Fundraiser
The SRC Execs would like to thank everyone for their donations on Uniform Free Day. Together we have raised a total of $300.30 for World Vision.
Thanks, Kess and Pip 😀 (On behalf of the SRC Execs.)
Schoolzine App’s Update
There is a new version of SZapp available for Android and IOS Devices. Please ensure that you have updated to this version to assure you receive communications from the school.
If you are using an Android Device, you will need to uninstall the old app and install the new version.
IOS Devices (iPhones) will be able to update without requiring a re-install.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are confident that the improvements in the new version will make it worth it.
An online guide on how to install and register/login to SZapp is available on the Schoolzine Website here:
If you experience any difficulties with completing this process, please reach out to Schoolzine using support@schoolzine.com. To assist with your query, they ask that you provide a description of the issue you are facing, the email address you are using when facing this issue and a screenshot of the issue.
School Lunch Boxes
Late last term on the cooler days we noticed an increase of students coming to the office saying they were still hungry after eating all the contents of their lunch boxes.
The colder weather leads to a drop in our body temperature, which means our appetites get stimulated as a result. Can we please ask that during the cooler months parents pack a little extra in their children’s lunch box for those days when they are extra hungry.
Illness
Just a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are unwell. All students and staff who are unwell with fever and/or respiratory infection or gastro like symptoms should remain at home and seek medical advice.
By staying at home the spread of illness can hopefully be contained, which then causes less disruption and risk to students and staff.
The Department of Health have a great link to ‘Exclusion from childcare, preschool, school and work’, which lists multiple illnesses/medical conditions and explains details like definitions, incubation and infectious periods as well as treatments, preventions and whether your child needs to be or how long they should be excluded from school until recovered.
Breakfast Club
Eden Hills PS Breakfast Club will recommence in Week 2 of this Term. Wednesday morning Breakfast Club continues to remain very popular with our students, and we are grateful to Kickstart for Kids for their ongoing volunteer support and donations of bread and milk. To better ensure all students can grab something to eat, we have recently started to provide Gluten Free and Dairy Free toast options. Breakfast Club is in Room 2 from 8:30 - 8:50 am. Please remind your students to come early to avoid missing out!
Breakfast Club relies on donations from our school community and we often run low on Gluten Free Bread, Non-Dairy Milk, Milo, Jam, Vegemite and Honey. We would be most thankful for any contributions – these can be left at the front office, or brought along to Breakfast Club on a Wednesday morning.
High School Enrolments
The Year 6 students received a ‘Starting Secondary School in 2024’ booklet this week for parents to access. This booklet contains useful information about the process of enrolling students into secondary schools. Parents also received an email, providing an online registration of interest form for high school. The form allows you to nominate a public high school or schools you would like your child to attend in 2024. Complete and submit the form by 26 May 2023.
Parents can find out more on the Department’s website.
